PE PRESIDENT CALLS FOR STRONG FOCUS ON CUSTOMERS AT DSM CONFERENCE
PHILADELPHIA, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- At a two day conference on demand-side management, Philadelphia Electric Company (NYSE: PE) President and Chief Operating Officer Corbin A. McNeill Jr. called for utilities to provide "service" and not just electricity and gas.
McNeill stated, "In a sense we are talking about radical changes in the way electric utilities have conducted their business during the past century."
During his opening remarks, McNeill said, "Demand-side management (DSM) will reshape the electric industry in ways unimaginable 30 or 40 years ago. Successful implementation will do much to make utilities competitive and customer driven."
Demand-side management is the name given to a broad array of utility programs designed to encourage customers to use less energy or to shift energy use to off-peak periods. The principle objective is to shape the demand for electricity or natural gas in a way that is beneficial for utilities and their customers.
Speaking to hundreds of utility representatives, McNeill noted, "We realize the need to focus on our customers and what they expect from us. Customers are interested in finding ways to get the energy services they need at the most reasonable cost possible." He urged the group to look for ways to get DSM out of the office and into the homes and businesses of customers.
McNeill said PE saw the need for a conference solely on implementation. "Many utilities in Pennsylvania have been gearing up to start DSM programs, but have needed to wait for the regulators to give the green light. The key question is how do we make DSM an effective resource for utilities and easy for our customers."
More than 300 utility managers, executives and consultants from across the country are attending the demand-side management implementation conference at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel in Philadelphia.
PE is hosting the two-day event along with nine other utility co- sponsors and Synergic Resources Inc. of Bala Cynwyd. It's aimed at examining the practical aspects of DSM programs. One theme is re- educating customers on how they think about and use electricity.
PE manager of marketing Ken Black says, "This conference is unique because we're looking at the nuts and bolts of implementing energy conservation and load management and not just planning it." Speeches, sessions and workshops are being held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Wednesday, June 24.
