PC WORLD AND LOTUS MAGAZINE JOIN FORCES; PC WORLD
IS NOW THE LARGEST COMPUTER MAGAZINE
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Pat Kenealy, president of PC World Communications, Inc., announced the merger of Cambridge, Mass., based Lotus Magazine and San Francisco-based PC World today. Beginning with the December issue, Lotus subscribers will receive their magazine bound in to the full edition of PC World.
The alliance of these two management-intensive audiences will make PC World the nation's largest computer magazine with a guaranteed rate base of 901,000 readers. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
PC World publisher Rich Marino called the magazine combination, "One of the most sensible publishing alliances of the 90's and the first of its kind ever." According to Marino, "Lotus readers have told us in surveys they want more editorial on hardware and more product reviews. Advertisers have told us they want to reach the broadest possible group of managers who buy PCs. This merger satisfies both groups."
PC World's accession to the rate base leadership position will add fire to what is already one of the more intense competitions in the magazine world. Pre-merger circulation figures for the magazines: PC World's last audit statement showed a paid circulation of 652,746 (up 6.5 percent from the prior statement, fastest growth level among major computer publications according tot ABC Fas Fax). Lotus Magazine's last audit showed 363,224 readers. Total unduplicated circulation of the combined magazines will be over 901,000.
Patrick J. McGovern, chairman of International Data Group(IDG), the parent company of PC World, hailed the combination as a significant advance in communications efficiency for the entire PC industry. "This merger," he said, "combines the strengths of both publications and will enable PC World to further enhance its value to readers." PC World Growth Continuing
In the last two years PC World has gained 31 percent in circulation, 20 percent in ad pages and 66 percent in page revenue. Advertising Age's June 1992 survey of the top 300 magazines in the U.S. ranked PC World 50th largest, up from number 67 the year before. The magazine's success is the result of a sharp focus on PC proficient managers, a group that has emerged as the key buying influence for hardware and software products. About PC World and IDG
