PB/Systra to study new commuter transit tunnel.

New Jersey Transit, in partnership with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, has awarded a contract to Transit Link Consultants, a joint venture of Parsons Brickerhoff (PB) and SYSTRA Consulting, to prepare a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the access to the Region's Core study.

The DEIS will involve engineering, environmental, economic, and financial studies as well as rail operations analysis for building a new commuter rail tunnel to link the new Secaucus Junction in New Jersey to Penn Station in Manhattan.

Building on a major investment study previously prepared by PB, the intent of the project is to investigate near-term (by 2010) and long-term solutions for improved transit connections between New Jersey and Manhattan. All long-term alternatives being studied (alter 2010) include a new Hudson Rivet commuter rail tunnel directly adjacent to the existing Amtrak tunnels.

The DEIS phase, which will include a strong public outreach/ scooping process, will be completed in June 9005.
