PAUL WYLIE SHOWS HOW TO CHAMPION AN OLYMPIC MAALOX MOMENT(TM)
PHILADELPHIA, March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Americans love the underdog.
We always seem to cheer a little louder for the athlete or team that's in second place during a championship battle.
At the 1992 Winter Olympics, most people didn't consider Paul Wylie to be the underdog. He was so far down the list of medal contenders that the experts and spectators were expecting nothing more than an enjoyable performance.
But Wylie gave them more -- much more. The 28-year-old Harvard graduate turned in a confident and polished performance that took everyone by surprise and added a spark of excitement to the men's figure skating competition. Although he had barely qualified for the American team (he made the final cut by one-tenth of a point), Wylie was able to return home with a silver medal.
"After the exciting men's competition created by Brian Boitano and Brian Orser at the 1988 Olympics, expectations were high for this year's figure skaters," said Patricia Wojdyla, vice president of marketing for Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, the makers of Maalox(R) products. "Those expectations created a classic Maalox Moment(TM) for the skaters, which can occur when the challenges, pressures and unpredictabilities of 'taking life on' play havoc with your stomach. Paul was one of the few skaters who successfully met the challenge and displayed a true American winning spirit."
For his outstanding accomplishment, Wylie has been selected by Rhone-Poulenc Rorer to receive the most recent Maalox Moment Award.
As part of the award, Wylie will receive a supply of Extra Strength Maalox Plus tablets to help him manage acid indigestion or upset stomachs that may accompany stressful and challenging situations in the future. In addition, he will receive a "Maalox Moment Survival Kit" to help him survive any future skating competitions.
The Maalox Moment Award is presented on a regular basis to individuals or groups who successfully manage a stressful situation that has occurred in any aspect of their daily lives. Past recipients have included Barbara Bush, the coaches of the 1992 Super Bowl teams, and the Minnesota Twins, winners of the 1991 World Series.
