PAUL SUTTON, BURBANK SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR.

Byline: Diana Peyton Staff Writer

Paul Sutton, head athletic director of Providence High School in Burbank, died Thursday morning after an 18-month fight against cancer.

``He was more than a coach,'' said associate and fellow coach Andrew Benzce. ``He taught the kids a lot about life.''

Sutton was born April 1, 1958, in Santa Monica. He attended St. Paul's First Lutheran School in North Hollywood, John Burroughs High School in Burbank and California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.

He returned to St. Paul's to teach for 13 years, moving on to Burroughs High School, where he coached boys' and girls' basketball since 1986. He also taught cross-country track, physical education, history and economics.

Sutton is survived by his wife, Dana; children Alison, 7, and Nate, 9; sister, Christine Dunn; mother, Bonnie; father, Ted; and stepmother.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at St. Finbar Catholic Church, 2010 W. Olive Ave., Burbank. A reception will follow at Providence High.

Two memorial funds have been established for the Paul Sutton Activity Center at Providence High School and for his children. Donations should be sent to the school.
