PASSCO to distribute 9 million sacks among wheat growers.

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) would start distribution of sacks among wheat growers across the crop growing areas in the country from April 18 (Tuesday) in order to procure the grains from the farmers on officially fixed rates.

'As many as 9 million bags have been prepared so far to procure about 900,000 metric tons of wheat from the provinces of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan,' an PASSCO official said.

Talking to reporter on Monday he said the corporation had been assigned a task to procure 900,000 metric tons of wheat from the farmers during the grain procurement campaign 2017-18.

The PASSCO, in collaboration with the respective districts governments and land revenue departments, would start bag distribution from Tuesday, he added.

Initially, he said, it was decided that 8 bags per acre would be provided to farmers and more sacks would be provided to them as according to their requirements.

Provision of sacks to small farmers and land holders were the top priority of the government to save them from the exploitation of middle man, he added.

He said that the wheat is being procured to fulfill the domestic requirements of the commodity as well as for keeping the strategic reserves, he added.

He further informed that PASSCO has established 11 zones across the wheat growing areas in the country to facilitate the growers to sell their produces on official fixed rates.

Other than the PASSCO procurement, the provincial governments have also made proper arrangements to procure wheat.

The Punjab province has been divided in 9 zones and wheat procurement centers have also been established in these zones to kick off the procurement campaign.

The corporation has also set up its zones and procurement centers, one each in Sindh and Balochistan provinces for procuring wheat from these areas, he added.

It may be recalled that government has fixed a target to procure about 7.05 million tons of wheat during the current season to fulfill the domestic requirements as well as for exporting.

Bumper wheat crop output of over 26 million tons was expected in the country during the crop season 2017-18 as against the production of about 25 million tons of same period of last year.
