PARTNAIRS NV PLACES ORDER FOR THE IL-96T AND M AIRCRAFT

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- PARTNAIRS NV, an Amsterdam-based aircraft trading and leasing company, has placed orders for five launch and five option IL-96T aircraft built by Ilyushin of Russia.
This is the first sale of the IL-96T or M, both of which are equipped with Pratt & Whitney engines and Rockwell Collins avionics, to a customer outside the Commonwealth of Independent States.
PARTNAIRS intends to purchase both passenger (IL-96M) and freighter versions (IL-96T) of the aircraft, which is in certification flight test. Deliveries will begin in 1996.
The potential value of the sale is approximately $700 million, including aircraft, engines, spare engines, and aircraft spares package. The order is worth about $280 million to Pratt & Whitney.
"We believe the IL-96T and M are great aircraft and will offer very competitive operating costs," said Pierre Pailleret, chief executive of PARTNAIRS.
"It is an excellent aircraft and, with its Pratt & Whitney engines, Collins avionics and other western built components, it offers a very high level of performance. From our current work, we believe operators in the CIS and abroad will be very interested in this airplane," he said.
"We are glad the work and the mutual confidence we have achieved over the past months are allowing us to be associated with the Ilyushin success story," he said.
The IL-96M had its first flight in April after a two-year program to convert an IL-96-300 to the new configuration, which included lengthening the fuselage, mounting four PW2337 engines and installing a full, state-of-the-art glass cockpit and avionics from Collins.
In a three-class configuration, the IL-96M can carry 318 passengers over 6,000 nautical miles. As a freighter, the aircraft can carry 90 tons of cargo over 3,500 nautical miles.
The IL-96 will complete certification in the Commonwealth of Independent States in 1995. This process is being monitored by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration as the pilot program in creating reciprocal certification standards between the two countries.
The IL-96T and M are expected to receive certification for operation outside the CIS in 1996.
"This is a great day for all of us at Ilyushin," said Genrick Novozhilov, chief designer of Ilyushin. "Two years ago we promised that we would debut this wonderful new airplane at the 1993 Paris Air Show. We are here and now we have won our first customer outside our own country.
"This demonstrates better than anything else that the combination of Russian and Western technology will make its mark in the aviation world," he said.
"We also are determined to deliver quality aircraft on time and to provide dedicated customer support worldwide," Novozhilov said.
Ilyushin currently has 25 firm orders and 15 options for the aircraft.
Pratt & Whitney is a unit of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX) based in Hartford, Conn.
