PARTICIPATION IN HMOS ON UPSWING IN PENNSYLVANIA

 HARRISBURG, Pa., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) in Pennsylvania increased membership by 16 percent during the past year, according to data released today by the state Department of Health.
 Pennsylvania's HMOs logged a 16 percent increase in enrollment from 1,686,098 to 1,954,360 from March 31, 1992, to March 31, 1993.
 The greatest increase in enrollment occurred in central Pennsylvania with new members increasing by 21 percent. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia regions experienced a 15 percent increase.
 According to the department's Bureau of Health Financing, one out of every 6.5 state residents are now enrolled in one of 19 HMOs in Pennsylvania.
 In Pennsylvania, 88 percent of the population live in counties served by at least one HMO.
 Nationally, HMOs increased enrollment 7 percent in 1992: the biggest jump in four years.
 Central Pennsylvania -- with seven HMOs -- increased enrollment from 330,056 on March 31, 1992, to 398,545 on March 31, 1993.
 During the same period, enrollment in the six Pittsburgh region HMOs increased from 289,300 to 333,910. Enrollment in the six Philadelphia region HMOs increased from 1,066,742 to 1,221,905.
