PARC committed to bring innovation in Agriculture sector through Durum Wheat.

ISLAMABAD -- Chairman Pakistan Agriculture and Research Council (PARC) Dr.Iftikhar Ahmad on Monday said that Agricultural Innovation Programme (AIP) for Pakistan is committed to bring innovation to the Agriculture Sector through Durum Wheat Value Chain Development.

"The continuous assistance from the American people through USAID has helped to uplift the economic circumstances of the poor communities in Pakistan, Dr. Iftikhar said.

He said this while speaking as chief guest in two workshop was organized at Wheat Research Institute AARI, Faisalabad and supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The workshop is a part of the broader agenda that USAID, CIMMYT and PARC are pursuing together to bring sustainable economic development to the region, he said, according to press release issued.

Country Representative, International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) Pakistan,Dr.Imtiaz Muhammad illustrated the importance of durum wheat in Pakistan.

He also explained how CIMMYT under AIP is working to develop this value chain and across various portfolios of AIP.

He said that AIP has brought a new dimension in durum wheat value chain development.

Dr.Imtiaz said CIMMYT, under AIP, aims to support durum wheat value chain development in Pakistan by providing technical assistance to facilitate flow of germplasm, fast tracking deployment of new varieties, market linkages and information networking.

CIMMYT's efforts in this new venture are highly commendable", said Dr. Abid Mehmood, DG Research Agriculture Punjab.

He said that International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT)

and Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) held the First National Workshop on the introduction of Durum Wheat in Pakistan as part of the Agricultural Innovation Program (AIP) for Pakistan.

He added that potential durum wheat value chain actors were brought together to discuss emerging opportunities and challenges.

The workshop brought together scientists and researchers, durum wheat producers, millers and representatives from the food processors, restaurants, seed industry and input suppliers to explore prospects in this emerging sector.

Durum wheat is an important cereal crop mostly grown under rainfed conditions of the semiarid tropics.

It is a quality produce trading into a generally higher quality food market and fetches higher price than bread wheat internationally.

The Agricultural Innovation Program (AIP) for Pakistan increases agricultural productivity and household incomes in the agricultural sector by promoting and disseminating the use of modern technologies and practices in the cereals (wheat, maize, and rice), livestock, and horticulture (fruits and vegetables) sectors.
