PARAMOUNT PUBLISHING ACQUIRES COMPUTER BOOK AND SOFTWARE PUBLISHING OPERATIONS OF MARKT & TECHNIK VERLAG AG

NEW YORK, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Paramount Publishing announced today that it has acquired the book and software publishing operations of Markt & Technik Verlag AG. Markt & Technik is a leading publisher of computer books, software, and magazines in Germany, the world's second-largest computer publishing market. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
"Our first foreign language publishing acquisition follows our strategy of creating and exploiting copyrights worldwide, increasing English-language sales in growing international markets, and publishing a range of products in local languages," said Richard E. Snyder, chairman of Paramount Publishing. "This acquisition is the first step in expanding our publishing infrastructure in Europe, allowing us to build significant German language computer and reference publishing businesses and to begin publishing in indigenous languages throughout the continent. Germany is a key stepping stone to developing the rich potential of local publishing in Eastern Europe and beyond."
"Our plan is to expand Markt & Technik's mission, using its strength as a leading computer publisher, into a German and English language computer and general reference publisher," Mr. Snyder said. "In addition to indigenous titles, we will exploit popular U.S. copyrights in computer, business and reference books in Germany and Eastern Europe through Markt & Technik's extensive distribution channels."
"Computer book and software publishing arc rapidly growing publishing categories and truly international in scope," said Frans Gianotten, president of Paramount Publishing International. "This acquisition furthers our commitment to these areas and complements our leadership position in the U.S. With more than half of all computer hardware and software sales occurring outside the U.S., the German computer publishing market is expected to achieve double-digit growth throughout the decade."
Paramount plans to announce shortly a new president to manage the acquired Markt & Technik operations and to direct the company's broadened multi-language publishing strategy. Markt & Technik, founded in 1976, is recognized as a pioneer in developing the computer publishing marketplace in the German language. Employees will continue to be based in Haar, Germany.
Paramount Publishing International, based in Hemel Hempstead, England, has operations in the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, Asia, Japan, Australia, Mexico, and the Middle East. Paramount Publishing, with imprints also including Simon & Schuster, Pocket Books and Prentice Hall, is one of the world's leading publishers of computer, educational, consumer, and business, technical and professional books. It is a division of New York-based Paramount Communications Inc. (NYSE: PCI), a global entertainment and publishing company.
