PARAMOUNT PICTURES SIGNS PAY-PER-VIEW OUTPUT AGREEMENT WITH DIRECTV(TM)

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- DirecTv Inc., a subsidiary of Hughes Communications Inc. announced that it has signed a pay-per- view output agreement with Paramount Pictures. Through DirecTv(TM), the United States' first high-power direct broadcast satellite (DBS) distribution service, every television household across the nation equipped with a low-cost 18-inch digital satellite receiving system will have access to impulse pay-per-view theatrical films and special events from Paramount Pictures. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"This announcement is the first in our pay-per-view programming category and broadens the scope of our home entertainment offering," said DirecTv President Eddy Hartenstein. "The agreement with Paramount will provide our customers with immediate access to a wide variety of quality motion pictures and entertainment programs. In addition, the convenience and choice of programming will greatly enhance consumers' viewing experience."
Robert V. Klingensmith, president of the Video Division for Paramount Pictures, also added, "Paramount is very pleased to be the first studio to join DirecTv in this exciting new venture. It is DirecTv's hope to be able to provide a multitude of pay-per-view channels providing both current and classic movies as well as special events. Our previous experiences have already proven to us that buy- rates expand exponentially as the number of pay-per-view channels expand. In addition, DirecTv's technology is not only of the highest quality but also of a consumer-friendly size that will allow anyone to be able to become a subscriber. We look forward to their great success."
Paramount will provide DirecTv with current-release films in a pay-per-view window after video store distribution. DirecTv customers will select movies either by title with a user-friendly remote control from the on-screen menu, or from a preview channel showing trailers of the current films. Current release and popular movies will be offered every 30 minutes, providing consumers with unprecedented convenience and access to quality entertainment. Pricing for the pay-per-view movies will be competitive with current pay-per-view pricing.
The DirecTv pay-per-view service will be offered to all television households subscribing to any DirecTv programming and equipped with the Digital Satellite System (DSS) manufactured by Thomson Consumer Electronics under the RCA brand name. DSS is a three-component home receiving system consisting of an 18-inch satellite antenna, a compact decoder box, and a universal remote control that will retail for approximately $700. The DSS remote control will enable consumers to move through the on-screen menu, select programs, review their current bill, or scan through their favorite channels. In addition, the digital DirecTv signal will provide viewers with CD-quality audio and near laserdisc quality video.
DirecTv is scheduled to launch the first of two high-power direct broadcast satellites in December 1993 and begin offering programming services in March 1994. The nationwide DirecTv programming distribution service will offer 150 channels of entertainment programming, pay-per-view movies, professional and college sports, and a wide assortment of special interest channels. DirecTv estimates that it will have 10 million subscribers by the year 2000.
