PARAMOUNT PICTURES 'ADOPTS' THE CALIFORNIA YOUTH THEATRE
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- To help cultivate young artistic talent, Paramount Pictures announced that it has "adopted" the California Youth Theatre, a non-profit organization committed to teaching both artistic expression and self-reliance to its students.
Founded in 1962 by a band of teachers, the California Youth Theatre seeks to provide youngsters from all walks of life with hands-on practical exposure to each aspect of the performing arts, teaching them the discipline and joy of drama. In addition, it serves as a positive alternative for kids growing up in today's urban environment.
"All of us at Paramount are proud to be associated with this talented group," said Brandon Tartikoff, chairman of Paramount Pictures. "Hopefully this partnership with the California Youth Theatre will provide important opportunities for these kids."
Paramount Pictures has designated stage 23 on its lot as the group's "home," where it will meet and rehearse for productions. Support space adjacent to the soundstage will serve as its headquarters. In addition to the support space, the group will have access to wardrobe, makeup, props and assistance in stage lighting. With its move onto the Paramount lot, the Youth Theatre will be able to develop its young talent while working in a professional entertainment atmosphere.
"This begins the reality of a dream we've had for many years," said Jack Nakano, artistic director of the California Youth Theatre. "It demonstrates the vision of Paramount to reach out to young people. It's a chance to show how a corporate and non-profit venture may mutually benefit."
Every year the organization holds auditions to seek new talent from schools across the state. Participants usually range in ages from 12 to 25, and are taught all facets of theater including performing, as well as technical and administrative tasks. The year culminates with a repertoire of professional-quality productions after a period of instruction.
For its summer 1992 season, the group presents "The Robber Bridegroom," a musical based upon the novel by Eudora Welty and "Strider," a play adapted from a story by Leo Tolstoy. This year, performances are presented by the community arts division of the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department at Barnsdall Art Park, located at 4800 Hollywood Blvd. Performances are free and play throughout the month of August.
