PARAMOUNT NAMES SHERRY LANSING CHAIRMAN, MOTION PICTURE GROUP
HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Paramount Communications Inc. (NYSE: PCI) today announced that Sherry Lansing has been named to the newly created position of chairman of the Motion Picture Group of Paramount Pictures.
This appointment, the company said, reflects a structural change in the Paramount Pictures organization in which both Ms. Lansing, as head of the Motion Picture Group, and Kerry McCluggage, president of the Television Group, will report to Stanley R. Jaffe, president and chief operating officer of Paramount Communications. Mr. Jaffe will relinquish the position of acting chairman of Paramount Pictures, a post he assumed following the unexpected departure of Brandon Tartikoff, who resigned last week citing family obligations.
Ms. Lansing will assume responsibility for overseeing all aspects of the company's motion picture operations effective immediately. Reporting to her will be Barry London, president/worldwide distribution, Motion Picture Group; John Goldwyn, president/production, Motion Picture Group; and William Bernstein, executive vice president of Paramount Pictures.
"Our journey to find the best possible person to entrust with our motion picture operations led Stanley and I no further than across the Paramount studio lot," said Martin S. Davis, chairman and chief executive officer of Paramount Communications. "Sherry has been a member of the Paramount family for nearly ten years and has been a leader in the motion picture industry for more than two decades," Mr. Davis added, "and that experience assures us a continuity of quality and provides the stability that no other candidate could bring to Paramount."
Mr. Jaffe said, "As Sherry's former partner in Jaffe/Lansing Productions, nobody knows better than I Sherry's total commitment to excellence, her leadership qualities and the enormous talent, intelligence and self-assurance she brings to any project she is associated with. I have witnessed first-hand," he noted, "a rare combination of creativity and business acumen that is unmatched in the motion picture business."
Mr. Jaffe emphasized that "Sherry's strong personal and professional relationship with virtually everyone at Paramount, her experience in managing a studio operation, and her knowledge of the motion pictures in our formidable 1993-94 slate, assures us that all of our green-lighted projects will continue uninterrupted and that those in various stages of development will continue to move forward."
Ms. Lansing said, "One of the strongest inducements in my acceptance of this position is the opportunity to work again with Stanley Jaffe. Another," she added, "is that, because I have been on the Paramount lot since 1983, I know and have worked closely with the key executives of the Motion Picture Group and its many talented and creative filmmakers. This knowledge we have of each other insures that the transition period will be brief and smooth.
"Paramount," Ms. Lansing said, "is a name that is synonymous with quality and I am looking forward with great enthusiasm to continuing that tradition."
Before this appointment, Ms. Lansing headed her own production company, Lansing Productions, which is currently producing "Indecent Proposal," starring Robert Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson, and scheduled for release by Paramount Pictures in April 1993.
During her partnership with Stanley Jaffe, formed in 1983, Jaffe/Lansing Productions produced six films for Paramount: "Black Rain," starring Michael Douglas; "The Accused," for which Jodie Foster received an Academy Award for Best Actress; "Fatal Attraction," starring Michael Douglas, Glenn Close and Anne Archer, which grossed more than $350 million worldwide; "Racing with the Moon;" and "First Born." "School Ties," the last production of Jaffe/Lansing, was distributed by Paramount in September.
Beginning in January 1980 and for three years, Ms. Lansing served as president of production at 20th Century Fox -- the first woman to hold that position in the motion picture industry. Among the films produced during her tenure were: "Nine to Five," "Chariots of Fire," "Without a Trace," "Taps," "King of Comedy" and "The Verdict." Prior to going to Fox, Ms. Lansing served as senior vice president at Columbia Pictures, where she was supervising executive on the production of "The China Syndrome" and "Kramer vs. Kramer."
Ms. Lansing has received numerous honors, including the Outstanding Woman in Business Award from the Women's Equity Action League; the Distinguished Community Service Award from Brandeis University; and the Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. Memorial Award. Last month, she was the recipient of the Simon Wiesenthal Center Distinguished Service Award for the Performing Arts.
Ms. Lansing, who graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree from Northwestern University, is married to film director William Friedkin.
