 PARAMOUNT COMMUNICATIONS, CAPITAL CITIES/ABC UNITS
 ANNOUNCE PAY-PER-VIEW JOINT VENTURE
NEW YORK, Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Madison Square Garden, a Paramount Communications company, and Capital Cities/ABC Video Enterprises, a subsidiary of Capital Cities/ABC, Inc., have formed a joint venture to develop and market pay-per-view programming. The announcement was made today by Robert M. Gutkowski, president of Madison Square Garden, and Herbert A. Granath, president of Capital Cities/ABC Video Enterprises.
The venture will utilize the resources of the partners to create, develop and market premium events for the pay-per-view industry. In addition, the venture will explore partnerships with a variety of suppliers of potential pay-per-view events. Sid Amira, senior vice president, affiliate affairs and business development for MSG Network, and Bruce Maggin, executive vice president of Capital Cities/ABC Video Enterprises, will oversee the venture.
In its first programming partnership, the venture will create a series of pay-per-view music event programs, which will be managed by Radio Vision International, the world's leading independent producer/distributor of music event programming. The initial event will be a Feb. 14 concert, "Valentine Vagabond: Rod Stewart Live On Valentine's Day," shown live from the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. The event will be priced at $19.95, and will be distributed to pay-per-view by Viewer's Choice and Request TV.
"In spite of the growth of pay-per-view, there remains a void of quality product, specifically in the entertainment area," said Amira. "We're convinced that the combined resources of Madison Square Garden, our parent company, Paramount Communications, and Capital Cities/ABC will give us the strength and diversity to serve as a lightning rod for all rights holders interested in pay-per-view exposure."
"The unique elements of each partner make the potential for this venture truly exciting," said Maggin. "We see this combination of resources as an opportunity to bring a multitude of marketing strengths to an expanding entertainment marketplace."
"It has been our intention to establish a presence in pay-per-view music events domestically for some time," said Kevin Wall, president of Radio Vision. "This partnership presents us with a very appealing opportunity to provide the same type of highly popular concert programming in the United States that we have been identified with abroad."
Madison Square Garden's operations include two of the entertainment industry's preeminent venues, the newly renovated Garden arena and the new, 5,600-seat theater, the Paramount. As part of the global entertainment and publishing operations of Paramount Communications, MSG brings its expertise in the television and pay-per-view fields, and can draw on Paramount Pictures' relationship with Request TV, one of the leading pay-per-view distributors.
Capital Cities/ABC's resources include its broadcasting interests, ownership stakes in several cable programming networks and rights to a variety of potential pay-per-view events.
