PARAMAX WINS U.S. POSTAL SERVICE CONTRACT
WITH A VALUE OF $42.6 MILLION
MCLEAN, Va., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Paramax Systems Corporation today announced that it has received notification from the U.S. Postal Service of the award of a Small Parcel and Bundle Sorter (SPBS) contract. Paramax, formerly Unisys Defense Systems, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS).
The initial award is valued at $42.6 million and covers the production and installation of 53 SPBS systems in the continental United States over the next two years. The contract also contains options for the U.S. Postal Service to order an additional 35-70 systems. This award follows the installation of 102 SPBS systems at 78 sites nationwide under a previous contract.
Frederick F. Jenny, president of Paramax, said: "This award is a result of our continuing commitment to excellence in meeting customer requirements and delivering quality products. We remain committed to a long-term partnership as a domestic supplier to the U.S. Postal Service."
The Paramax SPBS is a state-of-the-art high-speed sorting system for mail pieces up to 20 pounds and up to 15 inches in diameter. The design features unique motor-driven carrier-cell technology, which ensures precise and accurate sorting at a speed of up to 11,000 small parcels or bundles per hour. The computer-controlled system sorting process results in very rapid placement of mail packages into assigned output chutes. This product was developed under a manufacturing and technology licensing agreement with Paramax's partner, CML Handling Technology, Italy.
The work covered under this contract will be performed at Paramax's Electronic Systems division operations in Clearwater, Fla.; Eagan, Minn.; and Valley Forge, Pa.
Paramax also provides the Integrated Retail Terminal (IRT) seen at U.S. post offices across the country. The IRT is a point-of-sale workstation that includes PC-compatible microprocessor, electronic scale, keyboard, receipt/journal printer, micro-diskette drive, bar code scanner and two CRTs. The IRT calculates postal rates, provides receipts and records sales on a database.
Pursuing and winning the U.S. Postal Service contract reflects Paramax's strategy to increase its support of civilian government agencies, while maintaining its strengths in growth areas of the defense market. Paramax is positioned and committed to capture a larger market share of the growing mail handling automation business.
