PARAMAX TO PROVIDE ARTS IIIE FOR CHICAGO TRACON FACILITY

PARAMAX TO PROVIDE ARTS IIIE FOR CHICAGO TRACON FACILITY
MCLEAN, Va., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Paramax Systems Corporation announced today that it has been awarded a contract from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) covering software, services and hardware upgrade components under the Automated Radar Terminal System (ARTS) IIIE program. Paramax, formerly Unisys Defense Systems, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Unisys Corporation.
The contract, initially funded at approximately $6 million, calls for an ARTS IIIE system at the FAA's new Chicago Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility and also includes options for nine additional major U.S. locations. Because of the heavy increase in air traffic in the Chicago area, the FAA looked to Paramax Systems Corporation to install an ARTS IIIE system similar to the successful New York TRACON installation Paramax provided under a previous contract. Work on this new contract will be performed at Paramax's Electronic Systems division in Eagan, Minn.
The ARTS IIIE is the world's most advanced terminal air traffic control system. It is capable of handling extremely high traffic volume and can support multiple airports.
TRACONs provide radar service within a terminal area where several airports are in close proximity. They manage arrivals and departures at all airports within a certain area, as well as provide facilities for instrument arrivals, departures and overflights. Terminal areas require intense control because of the high volume of traffic converging on the airports and the requirement for only a three-mile separation between aircraft. These factors combine to produce a relatively small margin for error.
"This contract award continues to demonstrate the high degree of confidence the FAA has in Paramax," said Frederick F. Jenny, president of Paramax Systems Corporation. "Our recent successful installation of the New York area air traffic control center was a key factor in the selection of Paramax as the FAA's terminal air traffic control contractor. We are proud of the fact that we have had more than 30 years of successful experience in designing and developing computer systems including software, displays, radars and weather systems for the FAA."
Paramax Systems Corporation, headquartered in McLean, is a $2 billion information systems company with 16,000 employees. A subsidiary of Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS), Blue Bell, Pa., Paramax is an experienced leader in providing advanced integrated systems, electronic products and related professional services for civil and defense agencies in the United States, Canada and nations worldwide.
Unisys Corporation is a leading information systems company with 60,000 customers in more than 100 countries. The company is a leading manufacturer of commercial information systems, defense systems and related services.
