PARALYZED VETERANS AND CELLULAR ONE ANNOUNCE JOINT VENTURE
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Tri State Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) and Cellular One/Northeast have together established a new program to address the communication needs of paralyzed veterans, it was announced today.
The effort is part of Cellular One's larger plan to make cellular telephone technology and service more readily available to individuals with disabilities.
"Cellular technology enhances productivity, accessibility and safety, all of which are especially important to our members," said Joseph Kiren, executive director of the Tri State PVA. "We believe that this effort is a step toward a day when cellular equipment and service will be available to all people with disabilities."
"We're committed to adapting our technology and service to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities," said Paula McWilliams, manager of external affairs for Cellular One/Northeast. "What we learn from this program will be reviewed and refined in hope of making this local effort a model to be rolled-out to other associations regionally and nationally."
McCaw Cellular Communications, Inc., the nation's leading cellular telephone company, offers service primarily under the name Cellular One. Based near Seattle, in Kirkland, Wash., the company operates the North American Cellular Network and major regional systems in California, Florida, Texas, the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest, the Rocky Mountain States and the Northeast.
Paralyzed Veterans of America is chartered by the U.S. Congress to meet the needs of veterans who are paralyzed as a result of injury or disease. Nationwide, the organization maintains 46 chapters and sub-chapters, and 69 national service offices. It serves more than 16,000 members.
The Tri State PVA aims to further rehabilitation and promote physical and mental health among paralyzed veterans, hemoplegics, paraplegics and quadraplegics. The chapter works on behalf of its membership to secure necessary specialized treatments and special facilities, to acquire or establish pertinent training programs and to press for supportive legislation.
