PANHANDLE EASTERN CORPORATION'S 1 SOURCE UNIT LICENSES LINK ELECTRONIC INFORMATION SYSTEM TO BRITISH GAS PLC

HOUSTON, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- 1 Source Corporation, a unit of Panhandle Eastern Corporation (PEC) (NYSE: PEL), has signed an agreement to license the company's LINK(R) electronic customer interface system to British Gas plc (NYSE: BRG), the major natural gas transportation, trading and distribution company in the United Kingdom.
In the natural gas industry's first international computer software licensing agreement, British Gas has the option to use the entire LINK system or to use portions as building blocks to create its own information system.
"Competition in the U.K. gas market is growing fast. We need a ready-made system that will enable British Gas to provide customers of our transportation services with fast and accurate information about their pipeline use and related charges," said Harry Moulson, managing director of gas transportation at British Gas. "The Panhandle Eastern software fits the bill. We are modifying it for the U.K. market and will continue to monitor progress to ensure that it meets fully the needs of our customers."
British Gas is contracting with Ernst & Young's gas industry practice to implement the LINK system. Ernst & Young's staff assisted Panhandle Eastern in the development of the LINK system.
LINK is a fully integrated, computer-based natural gas pipeline information system that provides customers with the electronic framework to do business in today's new market-driven environment.
"LINK provides companies with a proven information system at a lower cost and with a shorter development period than creating their own system," said Fred J. Fowler, 1 Source president. "1 Source will continue marketing the LINK system to other companies interested in licensing LINK or using a LINK service provided by 1 Source."
Along with British Gas, CNG Transmission Corporation has also licensed the LINK system. Panhandle Eastern's four pipeline subsidiaries -- Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company, Trunkline Gas Company, Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation and Algonquin Gas Transmission Company -- also use LINK.
Ronald E. Harmond, of 1 Source, has been designated to arrange LINK contract agreements with other companies and to develop further information services for the gas industry. Additional information about LINK is available by calling Harmond at 713-627-5158.
Panhandle Eastern Corporation, America's natural gas transportation company, operates one of the nation's largest interstate natural gas pipeline systems, providing natural gas transportation and related services to the Midwest and Northeast markets.
