PANHANDLE EASTERN CORPORATION'S 1 SOURCE UNIT LICENSES LINK ELECTRONIC INFORMATION SYSTEM TO CNG TRANSMISSION CORPORATION

HOUSTON, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- 1 Source Corporation(TM), a new unit of Panhandle Eastern Corporation (PEC) (NYSE: PEL), and CNG Transmission Corporation have signed a licensing agreement under which CNG Transmission will use the enhanced LINK(R) electronic customer interface system. LINK is a fully integrated, computer-based natural gas pipeline information system that provides customers with the electronic framework to do business under today's new market-driven environment.
The enhanced LINK system was developed by PEC with extensive input from producers, shippers and marketers. In response to the new requirements of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's Order 636, PEC redesigned its entire LINK system -- from daily gas nominations and scheduling through billing -- to provide flexible, current and accurate information to its customers.
"The goal of this integrated new system is to help customers manage their daily business transactions and give them the ability to adapt quickly to changes in the marketplace. This system will provide the Panhandle Eastern Corporation pipelines, CNG Transmission and other parties who license it significant competitive advantages," said Dennis Hendrix, PEC president and chairman.
CNG Transmission licensed the system because the company believes LINK offers many advantages to its customers. "Our customers gain a degree of standardization from a proven system, which is much better than our creating a system unique to us," said L.J. Timms, Jr., CNG Transmission president. "The use of LINK will help us meet the needs of our customers in the Order 636 world."
Order 636, which requires interstate natural gas pipeline companies to unbundle the traditional merchant service into separate transportation and storage services, has created the need to better manage daily business information, including natural gas receipts, deliveries and imbalances. Order 636 has also created the new need to conduct capacity release transactions through an interactive system.
"By licensing the enhanced LINK system, interstate pipelines and local distribution companies have the option to avoid spending millions of dollars and a substantial amount of time creating their own systems and to gain the benefits of a common look and feel to customers," said Fred J. Fowler, 1 Source(TM) president. "Since LINK is a proven system that has been well-received in the industry, companies licensing LINK can focus their efforts on developing market-responsive services rather than a computer system.
"1 Source will continue working with other companies interested in licensing the LINK system," Fowler said. "Pipelines throughout the country will need the reliability and availability of information that LINK provides under the new operating environment created by Order 636."
Along with CNG Transmission, the four PEC pipelines -- Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company, Trunkline Gas Company, Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation and Algonquin Gas Transmission Company -- also use LINK.
Ronald E. Harmond, vice president, PEC, has been designated by 1 Source to arrange LINK licensing agreements with other companies and to develop further information services for the gas industry. Additional information about LINK is available by calling Harmond at 713-627-5158.
CNG Transmission Corporation is the interstate gas transmission subsidiary of Pittsburgh-based Consolidated Natural Gas Company (NYSE: CNG), a fully integrated natural gas company. Primarily a provider of gas transportation and storage services, CNG Transmission also sells some gas at wholesale to other CNG subsidiaries and to nonaffiliated utilities in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the country.
1 Source Corporation is a subsidiary of Panhandle Eastern Corporation, which operates one of the nation's largest interstate natural gas pipeline systems, providing natural gas and transportation related services to the Midwest and Northeast markets.
