       PANHANDLE EASTERN ANNOUNCES GENERAL COUNSELS FOR SUBSIDIARIES
    HOUSTON, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Carl B. King, senior vice president and general counsel for Panhandle Eastern Corporation (NYSE: PEL), announced three appointments in the legal department.
    Named vice president and general counsel for the company's operating pipeline subsidiaries are Patrick J. Hester, Algonquin Gas Transmission Company; Richard J. Kruse, Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation; and Merlin E. Remmenga, Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company and Trunkline Gas Company.  All had been deputy general counsels; Hester for Algonquin Gas Transmission Company and Kruse and Remmenga for Panhandle Eastern Corporation.
    Hester joined Algonquin in 1973 as a district engineer and held a number of positions of increasing responsibility in the pipeline and engineering departments.  He was named assistant manager of gas supply in 1984 and became corporate attorney in 1985.
    Before joining Algonquin, Hester was a civil engineer for Stone and Webster Engineering in 1973.  He received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1973 from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass., a master of science degree in civil engineering from Northeastern University in 1979 and a law degree from Suffolk University Law School in 1983.
    Kruse joined Texas Eastern in 1977, was appointed assistant general counsel in 1988 and was named deputy general counsel, regulatory/operations, in 1991.  He received a bachelor of science degree from Texas Tech University and a law degree from the University of Houston in 1977.
    Remmenga joined Panhandle Eastern in December 1988 as chief litigation counsel and was named deputy general counsel in 1991.  Before joining Panhandle Eastern, he had been an attorney in Omaha, Neb., with what is now Enron Corporation and the Metropolitan Utilities District of Omaha.  Remmenga received a bachelor of science degree in 1966 and a law degree in 1968 from the University of Nebraska.
    Panhandle Eastern Corporation operates one of the nation's largest interstate natural gas pipeline systems, providing natural gas to the Midwest and Northeast markets.
