PANDA CLAIMS FIRST OFFICE 2000 BUG HONORS.

Spanish anti-virus company Panda Software claims it has neutralized the first virus deployed against the Windows Office 2000 package - even though the software is still in Beta. The catchily-titled W200M/PSD is aimed specifically at Office 2000, infecting documents in Word 9.0 which are different from those used in Office 97. The action of the virus is a simple one. When a document carrying the virus is opened, the virus checks to see if the date and minute values coincide. If they do, it inserts between one and 70 randomly selected geometric shapes and places them over the text, making it illegible. All documents the user subsequently opens are infected, with the virus changing its configuration each time it strikes, a technique known as polymorphism.
