PALM SPRINGS GEARS UP FOR CORVETTE INVASION
PALM SPRINGS, Calif., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Palm Springs, the

desert oasis famous for celebrity golf classics and weekend getaways, gears up for a new type of star invasion Nov. 20-22 as hundreds of Corvette sports cars converge on the town for Corvette's 40th anniversary at the Chevrolet-sponsored Palm Springs Road Races.
The gala weekend features trackside displays of all 40 years of Corvettes, General Motors and Chevrolet design vehicles, specialty owner Corvettes, Corvette race cars and the One-Millionth Corvette traveling display.
More than 200 Corvettes will be featured in the Evolution of Corvette display (1953-1993) and the specialty owner Corvette exhibit adjacent the Wyndham Hotel and the Convention Center. These Corvettes will also take part in Corvette Thunder on Parade on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21-22, prior to the start of racing. Following a parade lap, the Evolution Corvettes will spin off for a tour through Palm Springs before returning to their exhibit spots.
A highlight of Sunday racing is the all-Corvette race at 2 p.m.
The One-Millionth Corvette traveling display includes a white 1953, the milestone 1992 white convertible and a 40th anniversary special edition 1993 ruby red convertible.
A 1993 Corvette color palette features Corvettes in every color available this year. Also on exhibit is a Chevrolet 1993 new car and truck display.
The Palm Springs Concours d'Elegance at Ruth Hardy Park on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. prominently displays Corvette's 40-year heritage as well as seven Corvette Featured Marque Classes: 1953- 1957, 1958-1962, 1963-1964, 1965-1967, 1968-1972, 1973-1982 and 1984- 1992.
Among the Chevrolet and General Motors executives on hand for the weekend are Chevrolet's General Manager and GM Vice President J.C. "Jim" Perkins; new GM Design Vice President Wayne K. Cherry; Donald L. Runkle, vice president in charge of engineering support activities; Herbert A. Fishel, director of GM's Motorsports Technology Group, as well as the only two men who have ever served as Corvette chief engineers -- 82-year-old Zora Arkus-Duntov and David R. McLellan.
Miss America 1993, Leanza Cornett, will make several appearances in Palm Springs on behalf of Chevrolet, including the Palm Springs Road Races welcome barbecue Thursday evening at the Wyndham.
Race car drivers taking part in Corvette's 40th anniversary celebration include Rick Mears, the four-time Indianapolis 500 winner and three-time CART national champion; Tom Kendall, five-time national champion in IMSA GTU, Firehawk Endurance and SCCA Trans-AM; and R.K. Smith, 1990 and 1992 SCCA World Challenge champion.
Saturday's tribute to Roger Penske dinner at the Convention Center benefits the National Corvette Museum. A virtual who's who of the racing world is expected for the $100 per ticket affair.
In fact, the excitement and anticipation have been building for weeks as Corvette owners, afficionados, intenders and vintage racing enthusiasts spread the word -- Palm Springs is the place to be Nov. 20-22.
