PALISADES FUEL ROD RECOVERY

JACKSON, Mich., July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Operators at Consumers Power Company's Palisades nuclear plant near South Haven are working to recover a fuel rod that came apart during routine refueling activities inside the plant's containment structure. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission was notified immediately upon its discovery yesterday. As is always the case during refueling, the plant was shut down at the time.
No radioactivity escaped into the environment because the event occurred within the concrete and steel containment building. The matter did not require activation of the plant's emergency plan.
Plant personnel found the rod, separated into four pieces, at the bottom of a fuel-handling area adjacent to the reactor inside containment. The rod had been contained in a bundle of 212 rods that had been removed briefly from the reactor and then returned to it.
Plant personnel are reviewing plans with the NRC to recover the fuel rod fragments during the current outage.
Consumers Power Company, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS), is Michigan's largest natural gas and electric utility serving almost 6 million of the state's 9 million residents in 67 of the 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
