PALESTINE - Dec 6 - Presidential Candidates In Statistical Dead Heat.

According to two opinion polls made public, the two leading presidential candidates, Mahmoud Abbas and Marwan Barghouti, are in a statistical dead heat ahead of the election Jan. 9 to replace the late Yasser Arafat. A third poll gave a comfortable lead to Abbas, a former PM and the official nominee of the dominant Fatah movement. Abbas has a slim lead of 40% to 38%, according to the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research. Barghouti had a narrow advantage of 46% to 44%, according to a poll conducted by Bir Zeit University's Development Studies Program. The third poll, staged by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion, gave Abbas a clear lead of 40% to 22%.
