PACIFICARE HEALTH SYSTEMS FORMS PHILANTHROPIC FOUNDATION
CYPRESS, Calif., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: PHSY) today announced that it has established a philanthropic foundation.
This nonprofit organization will be devoted to charitable, educational and health research causes that enhance the health, wellness and welfare of individuals, families or the public at large.
According to PacifiCare Health Systems' President and Chief Executive Officer Terry Hartshorn, "We formed this foundation because we are truly committed to being a responsive corporate citizen and 'giving back' to the communities we serve. While the foundation will be involved in a broad range of activities," he added, "due to the nature of our business, primary focus will be placed on health care- related issues."
Lucy Cunningham, who previously served as PacifiCare Health Systems' vice president for senior services, has been named president of the foundation.
Cunningham explains that, "The foundation's initial board of directors has been established and will be expanded to include additional business and civic community leaders. Once our organizational tasks are completed," she noted, "we can begin by prioritizing projects and responding to requests for the coming year."
The foundation will be funded primarily through support from PacifiCare Health Systems itself, as well as through donations made by its employees.
PacifiCare Health Systems owns and operates HMOs in California, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Washington. The company also operates Secure Horizons, one of the nation's largest Medicare risk programs. Other operations include Columbia General, an insurance subsidiary licensed in 33 states; LifeLink, one of California's largest managed behavioral health care companies; and Pacific Review Services, a utilization review and case management company.
