PACIFIC SCIENCE CENTER BEGINS RENOVATION

 SEATTLE, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pacific Science Center issued the following today:
 WHAT: First major Pacific Science Center renovations since it opened its doors after the 1962 World's Fair. The Science Center will remain open during all the renovations.
 WHEN: Now until December 1993.
 WHERE: South and north sides of Pacific Science Center.
 HOW: $5.6 million Building and Endowment Campaign, which is Phase One of the Major Gifts Program. Financial contributions from the state, corporations, foundations and individuals. More than 86 percent ($4.8 million) of the $5.6 million has been raised to date.
 WHO: Architects: The Callison Partnership
 Construction: Kiewit Construction
 WHY: Thirty years of operation and 25 million visitors have encouraged Pacific Science Center to update and enhance its existing facilities and exhibits.
 Phase One Construction Timeline (approximate)
 Cleaning:
 -- Late March to June: Clean exterior walls and pool pads;
 -- April: Clean pools; and
 -- April: Clean and paint arches.
 Building 3 and Science Playground and Technology exhibits
 -- May 10: Science Playground closes;
 -- May 17: Building 3 closes;
 -- Nov. 26: Renovated Building 3 re-opens for Model Railroad
 Show;
 -- Dec. 26: Science Playground re-opens for Science Circus; and
 -- Feb. 12, 1994: New technology exhibit opens.
 Building 3 will be completely enclosed and will have a new driveway for school buses and a three-story window wall facing Denny Way. The technology exhibit will feature recent technological developments and the science behind them.
 New Pads and Water Works Exhibit
 -- April to July: Pad construction; and
 -- July 15: Water Works exhibit opens.
 Water Works will feature water wheels, water cannons and interactive sculptures that will engage visitors while they are browsing or eating outdoors in the ponds area.
 Ticketing and Front Walkway
 -- April to June: Ticket booth construction; and
 -- May: Walkway to 2nd Avenue.
 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
 -- Pacific Science Center will be open throughout the renovations, with over 48,000 square feet of exhibits, including Dinosaurs, Kids Works and Body Works, plus traveling exhibits "Mission to Mars" and "Through the Garden Gate: The World of Beatrix Potter." The IMAX(R) Theater, Spacearium, Planetarium and Explore More Store will also continue operating.
 -- The Major Gifts Program is divided into four phase. Phases Two, Three and Four include plans for adding classrooms; developing new Life Science, Astrospace, Earth Science and Medical Technology exhibit areas; constructing a 180-seat Science Theater, refurbishing the IMAX Theater and more.
