PACIFIC RIM LEADS BTX INTERNATIONAL SALES

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- BTX Inc. doubled its international distributor base in the past year by adding the following countries: China, Hong Kong, Australia, Israel, Malaysia, Portugal, Thailand, and South Africa. Joan Kerr, director, International Sales, said, "Over 55 percent of BTX revenue comes from international distribution. To support these distributors, I plan to meet each at least once a year. This past year, Lois Crandell, BTX CEO, and I visited many of our European distributors. This year we will concentrate on the Pacific Rim since 50 percent of international sales originate from that area.
"We recently spent one week in Japan with B.M. Kiki, our best selling distributor. In Japan, we're even selling systems for research at the high school level. While there, we presented B.M. Kiki with our 1992 No. 1 Distributor of the Year Award.
"We've intensified our hands-on training. In November of 1992, Dr. James Saunders presented a seminar on `Electro Cell Fusion and Electroporation' in Malaysia at the University Pertanian Malaysia, Serdang. Dr. Sanders is a research biochemist for the Plant Sciences Institute, United States Department of Agriculture. He is a longtime user of the BTX ECM 200 Cell Fusion System. The seminar was designed to provide participants with the most recent developments in electrofusion and electroporation. It was well attended by scientists and technologists who intend to improve their studies in this area of research. In June, BTX hosted the 1993 International Sales Training Meeting in San Diego. Distributors from eight different countries attended. Other similar seminars are planned for 1993-1994. In November, at the invitation of the Malaysian Government, Dr. Saunders will again present a seminar and hands-on workshop on plant fusion. BTX is also sponsoring seminars in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore."
BTX has placed special emphasis on customer relations by improving international communications. According to Kerr, "All international correspondence is answered within 24 hours. Business hours have been extended to start at 6:00 each morning, which better fits the international time difference. Shipping is scheduled for a 48-hour delivery anywhere in the world."
BTX is regarded as the pioneer and technological leader in the broad, enabling technology of electroporation. Electroporation is the technique of physically introducing drugs or DNA into cells via pulsed electric fields. Founded in 1983, BTX has successfully introduced over 40 electroporation-related products for in vitro use in the research laboratory. The company is currently developing and testing drug delivery systems for treating certain cancers and preventing restenosis. BTX drug and gene delivery systems will ultimately provide broadly effective methods of treating cancer, heart disease, and eventually contribute to combating genetic diseases.
