PACIFIC REFINING TO CONTINUE OPERATIONS

HERCULES, Calif., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Pacific Refining Co. today announced that it will continue refining operations at its Hercules facility. This decision was based on a number of factors, including Pacific's recent success as a marketer of specialty asphalt flux. The company also plans to extend its asphalt production capabilities to provide customers with finished paving grade material.
Joseph Sparano, Pacific's chief executive officer, said, "Pacific's dedicated, hardworking employees have managed a remarkable turnaround in company performance over the last several months. I am very proud of their efforts. Pacific's renewed commitment to continue refining in California reflects cooperation between employees, customers, vendors, regulatory agency personnel, elected officials, the building trades and the community, as an improved market for our products emerged."
Sparano said that Pacific has been very satisfied with its experience in the specialty asphalt market. The company now sees a new opportunity to serve the paving asphalt market in Northern California.
"Pacific will continue efforts to obtain the permits required to upgrade and modify the Hercules refinery's processing equipment so we can produce cleaner fuels. The challenges of obtaining those permits and building an economically viable project remain significant hurdles, but our recent results and anticipated future performance make us optimistic," Sparano said.
"We are also determined to remain a good neighbor. We will continue upgrading our facilities and will operate a safe, reliable refinery. Our goal is to continue providing jobs and economic benefits to the community. We will maintain production of competitively priced products for our customers, who have remained supportive of Pacific through the recent period of uncertainty," said Sparano.
Pacific Refining Co. is a joint venture owned by subsidiaries of The Coastal Corp. (NYSE: CGP) and Sinochem, a state-owned, international, diversified business corporation of The Peoples Republic of China.
