PACIFIC COAST FEATHER: ORTHOPEDIC DOCTORS SAY HEALTHY SLEEP RESTS WITH QUALITY PILLOWS
SEATTLE, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Seventy-five percent of orthopedic doctors say that people sleep better and healthier using pillows that adjust to the size and shape of the body, according to a new health survey released today, the Pacific Coast Feather Co. (PCF) said. Seventy percent of doctors polled also say that neck and back problems can be worsened and sometimes caused by a bad pillow. The survey, conducted by research firm Yankelovich Clancy Shulman and sponsored by Pacific Coast Feather Co. of Seattle, one of the world's largest pillow manufacturers, is the first to show that bed pillows play a significant role in overall orthopedic health and should alert those suffering from orthopedic discomfort to the importance of pillows in the overall health regimen.
The landmark survey found down and feather pillows are an important contributor in helping maintain natural head, neck and spine alignment during sleep. The overwhelming majority of doctors also agreed that pillows that adjust to body contours and sleeping position are healthier than those that do not.
While much has been made of the role mattresses play in orthopedic health, the first-of-its-kind study ends long-time speculation about the role different pillows can play in providing a healthier night's sleep. Seventy percent of orthopedists surveyed believe that a quality pillow produces more restful sleep, which in turn can increase one's productivity during waking hours. "Because down clusters and feather can trap and hold air, pillows made with these materials are much more adjustable than other kinds of pillows," said Nick Hanauer, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Pacific Coast Feather.
Down and feather pillows also get the nod from orthopedists over synthetic-fill pillows for comfort and adjustability. "If you have a neck problem and want to maintain head and neck stability while you sleep, get a down and feather pillow. I've been recommending them for years," said Dr. Thomas Errico, a noted spine specialist at New York University Medical Center. Most doctors surveyed say they recommend specific kinds of pillows for their patients. "A good pillow actually encourages you to adopt the right kind of sleeping posture," said Errico.
Founded in 1924, Pacific Coast Feather Co. is a family-owned and operated manufacturer of pillows, comforters and bedding accessories located at 1964 Fourth Avenue South, Seattle, WA 98108. All down and feathers used in PCF products are purchased as a by-product of the worldwide industry that raises geese and ducks for food.
