PACIFIC BELL SIGNS CONTRACT WITH DSC COMMUNICATIONS CORPORATION FOR NEXT GENERATION DIGITAL LOOP CARRIER SYSTEMS

DALLAS, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- DSC Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: DIGI) announced today the signing of an agreement with Pacific Bell for the delivery of Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) equipment. The five-year agreement for DSC's Litespan(R)-2000, the telecommunications industry's first integrated Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)-based optical loop carrier system, commits Pacific Bell to purchase at least 80 percent of its NGDLC requirements from DSC.
Volume deployment of the Litespan-2000 is expected to begin immediately. Terms of the agreement, which is the longest, and one of the largest, such committed purchases for this type of telecommunications equipment in industry history, were not disclosed.
The process that led to today's award of business to DSC Communications Corporation began on Oct. 5, 1992 when Pacific Bell issued a Transport Technology Deployment (TTD) Request for Proposal to the telecommunication vendor community.
"This contract confirms Pacific Bell's continuing commitment to upgrade its network with SONET equipment to bring new flexibility, features and services to all our customers," said Pacific Bell's vice president for Network Technology, Ross Ireland.
"We are extremely pleased with Pacific Bell's confirmation of the technical attributes of the Litespan-2000 architecture as demonstrated by their five-year commitment. We view this agreement as representative of a valuable, long-term partnership between Pacific Bell and DSC Communications Corporation. This contract, along with the three other major Regional Holding Companies' contracts for Litespan-2000, demonstrates our leadership position in providing next generation digital loop carrier technology to the telecommunications industry," said James L. Donald, DSC's chairman and chief executive officer.
The Litespan-2000 system is currently operating in conformance with Bellcore's TR-TSY-000057 (digital loop carrier) and TR-TSY-000008 (digital switch interface) requirements. It supports a direct optical interface at the SONET OC-3 rate in accordance with Bellcore's TR-TSY- 000303 and is designed to be compatible with future broadband applications that use the SONET signal hierarchy.
Pacific Bell is a subsidiary of Pacific Telesis Group (NYSE: PAC), a worldwide diversified telecommunications corporation based in San Francisco.
DSC Communications Corporation is a leading designer, developer, manufacturer and marketer of digital switching, transmission, access and private network system products for the worldwide telecommunications marketplace.
Litespan-2000 is a registered trademark of DSC Communications Corporation.
