PACE Co-Rapporteurs Welcome Amendments on Restriction of Georgian President's Powers.

Tbilisi. The co-rapporteurs of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly's Monitoring Committee for Georgia, Michael

Aastrup Jensen (Denmark, ALDE) and Boris Tsilevich (Latvia) welcome constitutional amendments on restriction of President's right to

appoint individually the Cabinet of Ministers in case the parliament is dissolved.

The Parliament of Georgia approved in the third, last, reading amendments to the Constitution of the country on March 25.

Under the amendments, Georgian President cannot appoint the new Cabinet of Ministers upon dissolution of the Parliament, which has

declared no confidence to the President's introduced government three times. At the same time, former Cabinet of Ministers, led by

earlier dismissed Prime Minister, will be maintained. The amendments also ban dissolution of Parliament 'from May before the

President's inaugural ceremony until inaugural ceremony of the newly elected head of state.' The amendments will be passed upon their

signing by Georgian President and publication on the Legislative Bulletin's web-page. "These amendments eradicate a serious source for

misunderstanding and tension. That's why we welcome them, especially the fact that the amendments were passed with support of two

parties after the agreement between the ruling majority and the opposition had been made", is said in the statement of the co-

rapporteurs, which was published on Tuesday, March 26.

They also expressed hope that the sides would manifest readiness for cooperation in the process of work on other issues,

namely, on reformation of the High Council of Justice.

"Such readiness for compromise and cooperation may created a good basis for fruitful cohabitation", the statement reads.

PACE Co-Rapporteurs will visit Georgia on April 7-12 in the framework of a procedure of monitoring by the Parliamentary

Assembly for discussion of last political events and reforms in the country.
