P.A. BERGNER & CO. TO CLOSE FOUR STORES

MILWAUKEE, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Consistent with its ongoing financial reorganization efforts, P.A. Bergner & Co. today said it would close four of its stores, effective Jan. 29, 1994.
The four stores are: the Boston Store in Southgate Mall, Milwaukee; the Bergner's in Sangamon Center, Springfield, Ill.; and Carson Pirie Scott stores in Knollwood Mall, St. Louis Park, Minn., and in Highland Park, St. Paul, Minn.
Stanton J. Bluestone, president and chief executive officer of P.A. Bergner, said: "After conducting an extensive analysis of our company's operations, we have determined that these four stores' contribution to operating profit and sales productivity is significantly below the company average and that to direct any more attention and capital funding to them would compromise the overall profitability of the company.
"These are always very difficult decisions because of the impact store closings have on our associates and the neighborhoods affected. But as part of our reorganization process, we have a responsibility to measure all of our operations by the most stringent business standards in order to ensure the future success of our company," Bluestone said.
P.A. Bergner, which filed for protection under U.S. Bankruptcy law in August of 1991, expects to emerge from Chapter 11 proceedings in late October. Bluestone said that the company does not anticipate any more store closings in the foreseeable future.
Company officials have notified the approximately 410 people who work at the four stores that their positions will be eliminated between Jan. 16 and Jan. 29, 1994. The company has asked employees to indicate whether they would be interested in transferring to another location, and every effort will be made to retain as many as possible, Bluestone said. With the 3-1/2-month lead time, the company is optimistic those who desire it will be able to transfer, he noted.
The combined sales of the four stores in 1992 was $27.7 million, representing approximately 2 percent of the company's sales volume that year. All the stores are located in markets that have at least one other P.A. Bergner store.
P.A. Bergner & Co. is the 10th largest department store retailer in the United States with sales in excess of $1.1 billion and 63 stores in the Upper Midwest. Its operations include 38 Carson Pirie Scott stores in Greater Chicago, Indiana and Minnesota; 14 Bergner's in downstate Illinois and Wisconsin; and 11 Boston Stores in Wisconsin.
