P&H McLane vindicated over Mace buy.

Palmer & Harvey McLane claims it has turned Mace around since it inherited the wholesale rights to the symbol group from Booker Wholesale Foods last March.

According to P&H, it signed a further 27 Mace retailers in the last five months and another five are in the pipeline.

There are now 250 retailers in the Mace symbol group and P&H also supplies some 11,500 non affiliated stores.

The delivered wholesaler was plagued with problems when it inherited the Mace and Select & Save symbol groups from Booker last year.

Unhappy about the change of wholesaler, Select & Save retailers abandoned ship and 80 Mace retailers were also lost.

But P&H independent sales director Bill Ellis said the wholesaler was starting to come through with its pledge to "give Mace retailers the investment and support they were starved of by Booker".

He said: "We predicted a heavy fall out when we took over Mace and non affiliated independents last March.

"But since we began deliveries last April the non affiliated list has held up and in fact has grown rapidly in numbers and purchase levels."
