To take a break from the daily grind of business, nature lovers can try adventure racing hosted by Ozark Extreme Adventure Sports in North Little Rock.
Adventure racing is a "multisport event" that incorporates mountain biking, running, hiking, rappelling and rock climbing, all with self-navigation. Director Brandon Buffer said though it sounds like a high regimen of physical activity, almost anyone can participate in the races, describing them as a blend of intellectual wit and athleticism.
"We're targeting the average Joe that wants something different," Director Bruce Buffer said. "Unlike [ordinary] racing, there are a lot of choices in the decisions you make--everything from the navigation to what to carry."
Buffer said there are over 200 teams in the state, but his organization would like to make the sport more mainstream.
Buffer said there are plans for six races this year in Little Rock, Fayetteville and Hot Springs, with the winner of the final race receiving a $1,000 cash prize.
"The business itself was set up so we would have a way to raise funds and make people aware of the sport," Buffet said.
Ozark Extreme works with race event directing, course planning and new sprint adventure racing planning, which Buffer calls "adventure racing light."
Buffer said most of the funding for the organization comes from racing entry fees but that Ozark Extreme is open to sponsorship and eventually would like to provide team-building events and training classes for would-be racers.
Until then, Buffer said, the organization is a nonprofit, and all its volunteers are doing it simply for the "love of the sport."
