Oxbar from United Closures and Plastics

United Closures and Plastics Plc is a member of the CMB Packaging group and a major supplier of PET bottles. In conjunction with CMB Technology they have now developed Oxbar for use in PET-based packaging.

Oxbar provides a total oxygen barrier and is unaffected by temperature or humidity. We understand that it has a long but finite life and offers a number of advantages over the physical barrier polymers used in the packaging industry.

The active components of the Oxbar material are MXD6 nylon and cobalt salt with the cobalt catalysing the reaction of MXD6 with oxygen passing through the container wall. This material is produced premixed with PET granules and can then be used to form single layer containers using the standard conversion techniques on their stretch-blow moulding equipment.

The system thus offers considerable production benefits over the complex process used to produce multi-layer containers that provide physical barriers to permanent gases. Because of its monolithic rather multi-layer structure and its compatibility with PET, it should offer the potential for recycling.

Unlike some physical barrier polymers, we are assured that Oxbar maintains its total barrier properties even under elevated temperature and humidity conditions. It can even act as a headspace scavenger, so extending the life of its barrier properties further and enabling it to meet the shelf-life requirements of a wide range of oxygen-sensitive products.
