Owen hits gold in Commonwealth; POWER LIFTING.

MERTHYR-BORN power lifter Owen Hubbard took gold at the Commonwealth Championships in Bournemouth last weekend.

Hubbard, who competes in the 83kg weight class, took gold after an impressive 617.5 kg overall total in the unequipped category.

Hubbard also claimed gold in the junior equipped category after a 712.5kg total overall in the equipped category after an enthralling competition with South African lifter Nathan Valentine. who came within 12.5 kilos of taking the gold for himself. "It couldn't go any better really," said Hibbard afterwards.

"It's quite a lot of dedicated training, like four or five days a week every week and I have to be very strict basically, keep focused and be the best I can."

Hubbard's determination and hard work was praised by coach Paul Rees.

"I'm very proud, the lad has worked hard, been very committed, particularly in the time I've worked with him he's done everything he's been asked to do and yet his spirit and determination today were outstanding."

Hubbard, who was raised in Merthyr, made the move to Bournemouth 15 months ago to study nutrition and dietetics at Bournemouth University where he began training with Rees and a range of other competitive lifters.

This experience around other lifters proved invaluable as Hubbard went into the equipped category against Valentine.

"I had really good competition all the way against Nathan, he's a really great lifter and I just managed to beat him on the day.

"I pulled 255 on the dead-lift and he needed to pull 285 to win on his last lift and he got it off the floor really well.

"But fatigue kicked in and he just lose his grip which was fortunate for me and unfortunate for him. So I got the gold" Hubbard and Rees are now looking to the new year with the Junior British Championships being held at the end of March.
