Over 3,000 POs wanted by Islamabad police.

ISLAMABAD -- Over 3,000 proclaimed offenders (POs), including former military dictator retired Gen Pervez Musharraf, are wanted by the police in connection with various criminal activities.

The proclaimed offenders are wanted in crimes that include terrorism, murder, kidnapping for ransom and robbery.

Police said 3,273 people have been declared proclaimed offenders by the court in connection with their alleged involvement in terrorism, murder, kidnapping for ransom, robbery, automobile theft, attempted murder, hurt, rape, kidnapping, accidents, burglary, theft, dishonoured cheques and other criminal activities.

A police officer told Dawn that an officer has been appointment at the senior superintendent of police's office to deal with records and developments in proclaimed offenders' cases. Although the post already existed, it had previously been vacant in the capital.

In addition, he said, officials from the Gujranwala police the best in the country at apprehending proclaimed offenders have been invited to the capital to deliver lectures and train the Islamabad police to arrest wanted individuals.

The police have also approved the Federal Investigation Agency and the immigration department to obtain the travel histories of proclaimed offenders who have fled the country, the officer said. 'So far, 147 proclaimed offenders escaped, and their travel histories have been taken to trace and arrest them,' he said.

Red warrants have been obtained for the arrest of two such people, he said. The police are also in contact with Interpol's representative in Pakistan to get warrants issued for the other 145 proclaimed offenders who are abroad.

The officer said the proclaimed have also started taking action under Criminal Procedure Code section 88 (Attachment of property of absconding person) against proclaimed offenders. So far, properties of 314 proclaimed offenders have been attached by the police through the court.

He added that 216 people from Islamabad who allegedly sheltered proclaimed offenders have also been arrested.

Of the 3,273 proclaimed offenders, some have been at large for two decades, police said. Eight people are wanted in terrorism cases three in the Margalla police area, two each in Industrial Area and Sabzi Mandi and one in Shahzad Town.

A total of 365 people are wanted in connection with murder, of which 66 are wanted by Sabzi Mandi police, 45 by Shahzad Town, 44 by Tarnol, 40 by Golra, 36 by Koral, 17 by Industrial Area, 16 by Margalla, 14 by Sihala, 13 by Bhara Kahu, 12 each by Aabpara and Khanna, 11 by Nilor, 10 by Shalimar, seven by Ramna, six by Secretariat, four each by Kohsar, Karachi Company and Noon police, and one by Lohi Bher police.

In addition, 47 proclaimed offenders are wanted for kidnapping for ransom, of which 13 are wanted in Tarnol, nine in Shalimar, eight in Industrial Area, three each in Kohsar, Bhara Kahu and Margalla, two each in Aabpara, Sabzi Mandi and Koral, and one each in the Ramna and Nilor police areas.

A total of 44 proclaimed offenders are wanted for attempted murder, 53 for rape/kidnapping, 47 for hurt, four for fatal accidents, 11 for non-fatal accidents, 145 for robbery, 59 for dacoity, 35 for burglary and 82 for automobile theft.
