Outstanding Member Service Award. (ACEI Awards).
Steven Silvern has been chosen for this honor in recognition of 28 years of commitment to the organization and for his work as a devoted advocate in the field of education. Silvern has served as Auburn University ACEI Branch Adviser; Chair of the Technology Committee; and Chair of the Publications Committee, where he edited several columns, including "Research Review" and "Software Review." Prior to those positions, he served as Research Committee Chair; he also was Associate Editor (1986-1991) and then Editor (1992-1995) of the Journal of Research in Childhood Education. Teacher, writer, and lifelong learner, Silvern has been a tireless leader in advancing ACEI's efforts to provide children around the world with access to the best possible education.
Maria "M.J." Savaiano
Maria "M.J." Savaiano was one of the first National Board Certified Teachers in Minneapolis and a 1993 Presidential awardee for elementary science. As an instructor, she has inspired Minneapolis schoolchildren to become fascinated with science. Through the years, Savaiano has served ACEI on various local, state, and national committees; she has held the office of Vice President Representing Intermediate / Middle Childhood (1997-2000), and that of Program Chair for the 1996 ACEI Annual Conference in Minneapolis. Savaiano has contributed to Childhood Education and to the Focus on Elementary and the Focus on Middle School professional newsletters. In addition to the conferences and workshops at which she presented, Savaiano acted as an ACEI "People to People" Ambassador Program trip leader to South Africa, China, and Australia. She has made many significant contributions to ACEI and is deserving of this honor.
Renee Adams is a pioneer in the teaching of space science to elementary students, and a national proponent of integrating science and space study into public school curriculum. Now retired, Adams has served ACEI on various local, state, and national committees, including that of President of the Kentucky Branch and President of ACEI Presidents' Council. She has been a member of the Publications Committee, presented at numerous conferences, and attended the ACEI Centennial Conference in 1992. She shares her knowledge with other teachers by giving presentations and workshops, and by meeting with individuals one-on-one. Renee Adams's accomplishments, coupled with her dedication and commitment to the education of children, should be rewarded. We are very pleased to have honored her with this award.
