Outspoken barrister fought for black rights; OBITUARY.

A controversial Birmingham barrister and black rights activist who once tried to sue the Lord Chancellor and three judges for racial hatred has died.

Mr Rudy Narayan, who practised in the city between 1977 and 1980, died in London on Sunday.

Well known in Birmingham for his outspoken views, Mr Narayan, aged 60, was once criticised for going for a drink with jury members who acquitted two of his defendants accused of armed robbery.

But he defended his actions saying: "I will reserve my right as a citizen, at the end of a criminal case, to have a drink and chat with anybody in the world as long as no one breaks the rules."

He was a founder member of the Society of Black Lawyers in 1973, the Black Alliance Group which was launched in Wolverhampton in 1978 and later the Brixton-based Civil Rights UK.

He was a thorn in the side of the establishment and was suspended from practice three times by the Bar Disciplinary Tribunal and was finally struck off in 1994 for professional misconduct.

A Bar Council spokeswoman confirmed that he was still disbarred when he died.

Mr Narayan's daughter Sharmeen, aged 28, said her father died in London's King's College Hospital of liver disease.

The former British Army sergeant stood as an independent black candidate for Vauxhall, London, in 1989 before returning to his native Guyana for three years in 1991. Mr Narayan, who was divorced, leaves two daughters, Sharmeen and Yasmeen, aged 25.
