Outsourcing backlash.

I strongly agree with your March editorial about outsourcing ("Globalization and the New Luddites"). Backlash about outsourcing seriously undermines the credibility of CEOs and corporate boards in the eyes of the U.S. consumer.

Recently, I purchased a Dell PDA and had to call the company's customer service line for assistance. I was forced to hang up three times before reaching a person with whom I could have an intelligent conversation in English. Therein lies the roots of backlash.

As you correctly state, there must be a balance between the near-term bottom line, long-term consumer reaction and social responsibility.
