Recently, I purchased a Dell PDA and had to call the company's customer service line for assistance. I was forced to hang up three times before reaching a person with whom I could have an intelligent conversation in English. Therein lies the roots of backlash.
As you correctly state, there must be a balance between the near-term bottom line, long-term consumer reaction and social responsibility.
