Outrage over bird poisonings.

Byline: Marianna Pissa

The Green Party yesterday condemned all poisoning of animals and birds, and said the state bears great responsibility for the practice.

He was speaking after the discovery on Friday of more than 300 dead partridges after their water feeders were laced with poison. They were found dead in the Karkotis River near Evrychou by the Game Fund and had been due to be released for the start of the hunting season.

Green Party Leader George Perdikis said that like every year, as the hunting season approaches "terrible events occur, such as the phenomenon of poisoning or theft of hunting dogs".

He described Friday's incident as "part of the sick side of an unhealthy habit that is supposed to entertain thousands of Cypriots".

Perdikis said that people resort to the poisoning of animals to resolve personal differences and that "the innocent animals and birds are subject to murderous consequences of human relations".

The Leader of the Greens accused the state of not taking any effective measure to combat this unacceptable practice.

Perdikis said that the Greens have launched a massive campaign of signatures and already gathered 10,000 signatures which will be tabled in the relevant ministries to put pressure on the Government.

Commenting on hunting in general, Perdikis said: "The large number of hunters is a negative factor for the environment, wildlife and the fauna and the hunters themselves." The overpopulation of hunters poses security risks and maximises the pressure on wildlife and nature in general, he said.
