Outdoor suppers, dancing, horseback rides . . . in Moab, Utah

The spectacular scenery of Canyonlandsand Arches national parks in southeastern Utah, and excursions on the nearby Colorado River, draw many campers to these places. But after a day of tramping, paddling, pedaling, or bouncing through red rock country, campfire cookery and cleanup may not seem very appealing.

If that's the case, head for the town ofMoab. Here, on summer evenings, you can sit down outdoors and enjoy a chuck-wagon-style dinner, with entertainment. If you prefer, there's also indoor seating.

In downtown Moab, try The Hideout(400 N. Main Street), serving dinner from 5:30 P.M. daily. Its menu includes grilled pork chops, different cuts of steak, and shish kebab--all with baked potato, salad, and garlic bread--for $6 to $17. The band that plays after 7 Wednesdays through Saturdays will soon have you kicking up your heels on the outdoor dance floor. Singers perform other evenings. To reserve, call (801) 259-5699.

At Pack Creek Ranch, 14 miles south oftown, you can enjoy a 2-hour horseback ride that starts at 5 P.M., followed by supper. You get a horse matched to your degree of expertise (or lack thereof), then take off with a wrangler for a cool twilight ride in the La Sal Mountains and perhaps see a red sunset in canyon country. Back at the ranch (stay overnight, if you like), you dine in an outdoor pavilion on barbecued steak or ribs and three-bean, potato, and fruit salads with garlic bread. There's guitar or piano entertainment.

The ride and dinner cost $25; dinner aloneis $12.50. When there's a full moon (June 11, July 10, August 9, September 7), an after-dinner ride is available at 9. For reservations and directions, call Pack Creek Ranch at 259-5505.

Two other concerns arrange cookouts atscenic locations:

Adrift Adventures (376 N. Main Street;259-8594) offers cookouts three nights a week, from $7.50 per person; days and locations vary.

Tag-A-Long Tours (452 N. Main Street;259-8946) will prepare cookouts for groups of 12 or more, provided you make arrangements in advance. Suppers are priced from $19 per person.
