Out of the loop; Osborne grants more powers for some cities and holds talks with others - but there's nothing for the North East because we're dragging our feet over a mayor.

THE region was condemned to the "Northern Doghouse" in George Osborne's Budget speech as a failure of leadership on devolution sees "clear blue water" open up between the North East and neighbouring regions, it is claimed.

A roll call of areas in line for devolution included Sheffield, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, West Yorkshire and Cornwall.

But the Chancellor made no mention of the North East anywhere in his address yesterday. Labour leaders in the region have objected to Mr Osborne's insistence on an elected mayor.

Fear is now spreading that the North East will be left behind as devolution deals are struck.
