ONE of Birmingham's best-known independent street food traders has blasted 28 no-show diners who failed to turn up to a sold-out pop-up event.

Andy Stubbs, the founder of Andy's Low'N'Slow, said the 28 people "simply could not be bothered" to let him know they couldn't make the event at Poli pizzeria in Kings Heath.

The pop-up night, a collaboration with Poli chef Matt Wilden and Poli owners Sophie and Harry Poultney, had been fully booked - and had a waiting list of people hoping to get a table from any cancellations.

In a Facebook post, Digbeth Dining Club regular Andy said: "I had prepped enough, meaning there was a lot of waste, and more annoyingly there was a huge list of people who would have given anything to come last night.

"I estimate that loss in numbers would have been around PS600 in sales which to small business is not absorbable and downright out of order."

He ended the post saying: "Please always cancel your bookings even if it's last minute as this are our lives you are f****** with!" The event took place at Poli on York Road on Monday, October 28, and received rave reviews from foodies.

Andy said as it was a pop-up, he and the restaurant decided when they began promoting the night "not to take a deposit and trust everyone." However, he said he will now be taking a full payment in the future.

There was an outpouring of social media support in comments on the Facebook post, with many branding the no-shows rude, selfish and disrespectful.

Michael Skirving said: "That is disgraceful! I feel for you both knowing the effort and you will have put into your dishes and preparation.

"Certainly take a deposit and if you know who the culprits are... refuse to take any further booking from them."

In October 2018 Emma-Louise Yufera, owner of the now closed El Borracho and Migas restaurants, described how no shows were "killing business".
