Our say.

THE pounds 15m upgrade of Billingham Forum is an exciting opportunity to create a sports and leisure venue fit for the 21st century.

The 40-year-old building has come to the end of its natural life.

And this major injection of investment and improvement is vital to ensure its longevity in Teesside's leisure scene.

It's inevitable such a large-scale project will bring disruption.

But surely that's a price worth paying to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

Billingham is working hard to shake off a decaying 1960s image and become a vibrant Teesside town.

Transformation of the Forum is key to that process - and by taking a short-term hit now the region will reap the rewards in the long term.

THE Gazette's Tees Pride campaign has long championed Tees Valley as a great place to live, work, study and do business. And both our ABC - A Brilliant Career and Pride In Our Process Industry initiatives have further bolstered our region's reputation as the ideal location to forge a bright future.

So it's good to see One North East's Passionate People, Passionate Places initiative now also taking further steps to bring to the area world-class companies in process, digital and engineering sectors among others.

We need to shout from the rooftops what Tees Valley has to offer - we're an ambitious North-east city region that's really going places.
