Our meal break fight has benefited public; Your view.

Byline: G.H., Paramedic

NOW that the meal break issues within the Scottish Ambulance Service have finally been resolved, I'd like to respond to the negative coverage staff were subjected to.

Throughout the discussions, we were described as lazy money grabbers who drank tea while patients lay dying nearby.

As a workforce, we've never been motivated by extra money but simply felt we were entitled to the basic right of being paid fairly for the hours we worked.

The new deal will see our working hours reduced and all emergency calls attended to irrespective of us being on a break or not - without any financial reward for responding.

As well as having ambulance crews immediately available, the deal means 150 extra staff being recruited and improvements in the service overall, which can only benefit the public and t he staff.

Hopefully now people will understand the reasons behind our argument and support and appreciate the hard work that we do.

G.H., Paramedic
