Oudtshoorn arranged an IYA2009 event with a difference: Star inspired fine art!

Oudtshoorn arranged an IYA2009 event with a difference: Star inspired fine art! Kerry Hampson has been an ASSA and Midlands Centre member for many years now. About ten years ago she moved down to the Klein Karoo, enjoying the clear skies there. Apart from astronomy, Kerry is also an artist actively involved in the ArtKaroo Gallery in Oudtshoorn. At the beginning of the year, when gallery owner Janet Dixon was pondering over a topic for their next exhibition, Kerry suggested Astronomy, this being the IYA2009. Kerry's idea was instantly grasped, endorsed by Janet, and expanded supernova-style by the local artists. Inspired by a specially reproduced etching of Galileo Galilei prominently on display at the Gallery, everybody, including Kerry and Janet, were soon hard at work behind their easels.

The great moment finally arrived on Tuesday, 23 June 2009 when the exhibition, titled Another Starry Night, opened in the ArtKaroo Gallery. In true IYA2009 spirit, it was more than your ordinary art exhibition. Rudi Oberholzer, who regularly gives stargazing echo tours at the Swartberg Country Manor, brought along two telescopes kindly loaned by this establishment. Using these and others brought by Kerry and Janet, the guests could view not only the artist's celestial interpretations on display but also the natural fine art of the heavens.

The weather played fair. Though it had been pouring with rain all day, the skies cleared for the few hours needed to show Saturn and some glorious stars and constellations to the guests. Rudi also presented a short orientation talk on the night sky and elaborated on what was to be seen in the telescopes. Somewhere between 30 to 50 eager people attended, not only to see what the artists had done, but also to be introduced to the fun of a star party.
