Orlandini looks to win on the tarmac of Arequipa.

Summary: 2006 Peruvian Rally Champion Raul Orlandini goes to the penultimate round of the 2008 Peruvian Rally Championship, Rally Premio Ciudad de Arequipa, this weekend in search of a victory on his favourite surface, asphalt.

The event takes place in Arequipa, known as the white city because of its buildings made of CysillarCO, a pearly white volcano rock, located approximately 1020kms south of Lima. It is the only asphalt event of the calendar and it is characterised for its fast roads on the first day and twisty sections on leg two.

After a second place in the last round of the series, Rally Region Junin, Orlandini is confident he can take the overall victory on a surface he always felt comfortable with and that has given him his first tastes of victory while driving karts and circuit races.

C[pounds sterling]Asphalt is my expertise so ICOm really looking forward to drive again on it this weekend,C[yen] said Orlandini. C[pounds sterling]My first years driving karts and the several circuit races that ICOve competed and won have really helped me in my rally career and now I plan to use all my tarmac skills to their fullest.C[yen]

The 23-year-old is currently 15 points behind championship leader Nicolas Fuchs and only two points from second place Ernesto Jochamowitz; a win in Arequipa would put him second in the championship going into the last round of the series in November.

C[pounds sterling]ICOm really confident that I can win here. Anything can happen and if Fuchs retires and I win, I would be only five points behind him going into the last rally of the season. I know the odds are slim but hopefully luck will be on our side.C[yen]

The event will cover a total of 136 competitive kilometres divided into eight special stages, with four tests on day one, of 16kms each, and the rest from leg two of 18kms each.

The action kicks off Friday (16 August) with a ceremonial start in the city of Arequipa. The first car starts SS1 on Saturday at 9.00am, local time (GMT -5hrs), and the rally finishes on Sunday with a prize giving ceremony at the Francisco Bolognesi Stadium at 4.00pm.
