This 43rd volume in the annual series responds to the considerable interest in applying stereoselective reactions by flagging reactions that occur with significant diasterometric or enantiometric excess with de or ee in the margin. In order to limit the size of the volume, care is taken to reduce or avoid overlap with publications reviewing neighboring specialties such as photochemical reactions and biosynthesis. Like everyone else, the editors have noticed the growing gap between publication of the literature and publication of the review of it; steps are being taken and next year's edition is expected in nine months. Among the categories of reaction considered are oxidation and reduction, nucleophilic and electrophilic aromatic substitution, elimination reactions, and molecular rearrangements.
