Set in 1792 during the violent aftermath of the French Revolution when thousands were being guillotined as enemies of the revolution, this classic adventure/romance novel is still very much alive with brilliant dialogue, description and characterization. The Scarlet Pimpernel (actually a small red English flower) is the nickname of an aristocrat who heads up a group who risk their lives to rescue French aristocrats from certain death and bring them to safe haven in England. The French would love to find and kill him but he always seems to elude capture. The constant tension in the novel comes from never knowing if his identity will be revealed and thus his brave life ended. Cosham's gentle, British-accented reading keeps the tension up, the frequently humorous adventures flowing and the romance breathless. Truly a classic. Jean Palmer, KLIATT
